Combining Fake Journals with Fake Conferences: Global Business ...

If you have ever wanted an employer-paid vacation and the ability to chalk up a new publication at the same time, the Global Business & International Management Conference (GBIM) gives you a great opportunity to do so.

GBIM hosts bogus conferences at fun destinations (such as Orlando) and then publishes your paper in its conference proceedings ? all for a price of course. What is that price?? Here?s what it says on GBIM?s website:

For this payment here?s what you get, according to the website:

Registration Fee includes:

Opportunity to present your paper at our international conference
Get a copy of the conference proceeding [sic]
Opportunity to meet and network participants [sic]
Conference materials

Local sightseeing will be introduced for interested participants

The organization also publishes three online, open-access journals:

Journal of Human Resource [sic] and Adult Learning
Journal of International Management Studies
The Journal of Global Business Management

These journals use the author-pays model of open access and assess these charges, according to the website (the charges are the same for all three journals; this statement is from one of them):

?The author of accepted paper [sic] must pay the journal publication fee of $500 U.S. dollars [sic] to publish his/her paper in the Journal of Human Resource [sic] and Adult Learning. The journal publication fee for papers with two authors will be $600 U.S. dollars [sic] and the journal publication fee for papers with three authors will be $700 U.S. dollars [sic].?

This is a Taiwan-based organization. It organizes three conferences a year. The site?s main web page includes large pictures of Disney World and Sea World. It boasts that the ?GBIM conference journal is listed in ULRICH?S Directory,? but that is meaningless since Ulrich?s strives to be comprehensive.

This is an especially egregious scam, for they get your money coming and going.

Dick Van Dyke marries makeup artist at age 86

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Dick Van Dyke is a very happy newlywed at age 86, his spokesman said Friday.

Van Dyke and makeup artist Arlene Silver, 40, were married last week in a small Leap Day ceremony at a Malibu chapel near the actor's home, publicist Bob Palmer said.

"I've never seen him happier. She adds a lot to his life," he said, adding that the couple has much in common, including a love of singing.

Members of Silver's family and some of Van Dyke's close friends were on hand for the intimate wedding. Van Dyke suggested the couple may hold a bigger ceremony in the future, Palmer said.

Silver and the stage, film and TV star became friends about five years ago after meeting at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, Palmer said Friday.

Michelle Triola Marvin, Van Dyke's partner of 30 years, died in October 2009 at age 76.

Van Dyke gained fame in the musical "Bye Bye Birdie," for which he won a Tony Award in 1961, and starred in the 1963 film based on the play. His other movie credits include "Mary Poppins" and "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang."

The 1961-66 "The Dick Van Dyke Show" made him a TV star, and he's proved an enduring one: His other series include "Diagnosis Murder" (1993-2002) and made-for-TV movies such as 2008's "Murder 101: New Age."

Van Dyke, who had a longtime marriage that ended in divorce, has four children.

Boaters warned of whales in San Francisco Bay

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? At least one gray whale is still hanging around San Francisco Bay a day after a mother and her calf were first spotted near the Golden Gate Bridge.

Federal wildlife officials say whale spray was seen again Thursday morning as boaters were warned to steer clear of the wayward pair if spotted. It wasn't clear if the spray was from one or two whales.

Farallones Marine Sanctuary spokeswoman Mary Jane Schramm says witnesses observed a small boat speeding toward the whales, forcing the pair to get out of the way. Schramm says boaters who harass whales could face civil and criminal penalties.

Thousands of gray whales migrate each spring from off the coast of Mexico to feeding grounds off Alaska. Several whales typically wander into the bay each year.

Solar Flares and OS Net ? the impact on GPS? - Ordnance Survey ...

Space weather is once again in the news ? with a big solar flare hitting Earth this morning.

Solar flares are related to sunspot activity which tends to run in 11 year cycles. We?re now in the period where sunspot activity is increasing to a maximum for the current cycle. This morning?s flare is the biggest for 5 years ? and tonight there is a chance Scotland might even get to experience the Northern Lights as a result.

However Solar flares can disrupt electromagnetic communications especially ones involving satellites. Solar flares increase the electromagnetic activity in a part of the Earth?s atmosphere called the ionosphere. This increases the impact of the ionosphere on GNSS signals (the generic term for all the navigation satellites orbiting the Earth, like GPS).

In the context of OS Net, our national network of 110 satellite receiver stations that make precision map making possible, a period of bad ?space weather? can make our work much more difficult. It makes satellites harder pick up and track from the ground. Also, in order to calculate an accurate position, the effect of the ionosphere must be modelled and then removed. When ionospheric activity is high and changing rapidly (like it is at the moment) this modelling is much more difficult.? Space weather is also bad news for users who derive accurate timing from GNSS such as to synchronise computer and communications networks.

During a space weather event, GNSS users may experience a loss of satellite signal or errors in position or timing. Using a network of? dual frequency satellite receiver stations, like OS Net, as opposed to a single base station solution is the best way to mitigate the effects of bad space weather. Processing data from a network of base stations allows for the best possible real time modelling of the changing effect of the ionosphere. This means more robust data is sent to our 250 surveyors working to map the changes across the country.

In the meantime, we?re working hard to make sure the affects of this current period of bad weather have as little impact on our work and the people who rely on our data, as possible.

The data from a national network of high precision, dual frequency receivers such OS Net is also useful to predict and monitor the impacts of space weather on the positioning and timing community, these receivers are capable of directly measuring the?ionospheric delay of the satellite signals as they?travel down to earth ,?unlike standard GPS receivers.?Ordnance Survey are also a partner in SENTINEL ? a Technology Strategy Board sponsored research project to monitor the impact of such things as space weather on GNSS signals.? The data collected by OS Net stations and SENTINEL ?probes? across the country during today?s event will make an important contribution to the research in to the impacts of space weather on GNSS signals.

Pakistan charges Osama bin Laden's widows

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan?? Osama bin Laden's three widows have been charged with illegally entering and living in the country, Pakistan's interior minister said on Thursday.

The three have been in detention in Pakistan since May last year, when U.S. commandos raided the house where they, bin Laden and several children were staying.

The commandos killed the al-Qaida leader in a secret raid in the garrison town of Abbottabad in May last year after a decade-long manhunt.

NYT: Retired brigadier seeks to clarify Osama bin Laden's last days

"They (the wives) were presented before the court. After that, they are on judicial remand, and are being kept in a proper, legal manner," Minister Rehman Malik told reporters.

"Cases have been registered against the adults, not the children."

Two of the wives are Saudi nationals, and one is from Yemen, according to the Pakistani foreign ministry. The women, along with several children, were living in Pakistan without a visa.

Pakistan had previously said that it would repatriate the women to their home countries after a government commission probing the bin Laden raid had completed its questioning.

But NBC News reported that the interior ministry had encountered problems repatriating the women to Saudi Arabia and Yemen because they did not have passports or any other documentation.

According to the BBC, Malik said the children were free to return to their native countries if their mothers agreed.

Possible punishments unclear
Malik did not specify which court was dealing with the case, or where the women or children were being held. They will have to stand trial, but it was not clear what punishment they faced if convicted.

Malik did not say when they were charged.

The commission has interviewed the family members for clues about how the al-Qaida chief managed to stay in the country undetected.

The youngest widow, Amal Ahmed Abdulfattah, told Pakistani investigators in May that bin Laden and his family lived for five years in the compound in Abbottabad where he was killed.

Abdulfattah's brother, Zachariah al Sadah, was in Pakistan trying to secure her and her children's release, NBC News reported.

He has apparently complained to the Pakistani Supreme Court about the detention, saying the wives and children are being kept in two rooms and not allowed outside.

The raid on bin Laden's compound plunged the relationship between uneasy allies Pakistan and the United States to their lowest point since Islamabad joined Washington in the global war against militancy.

While the operation was hailed as a success in the United States, Pakistan reacted angrily, terming the raid a gross violation of its sovereignty.
