Intermission: Sunset Crater

(Apologies to Mount St. Helens fans. I didn?t have this week?s installment written up in advance, and now my uterus has attacked. We?ll get on with the saga next week. For now, I?ll chuck a repost from En Tequila Es Verdad at you, introducing you to a volcano of my youth. This was written in July of 2009. I?ve prettified the photos for you a bit. I didn?t have teh super-awesome photo editing software back in the old days. I hope you like this sweet little cinder cone as much as I do ? she?s a beaut, although not a butte. Ah-ha-ha. Sorry, I couldn?t help myself just there. You know geologists and puns?)

Sunset Crater, a fabulously beautiful cindercone just outside Flagstaff, AZ. I spent much of my childhood learning to love volcanoes here. Photo is taken from a meadow created by lahars from the San Francisco Peaks, a stratovolcano that dominates the view to the southwest. Image courtesy Cujo359.

The winter of 1064-65* wasn?t a particularly good one for the locals. There was the 6 mile fissure that opened and began pumping out lava. Then one end of the fissure started throwing scoria at them, collapsing the roofs of their pit houses under hot heaps of fresh cinders and ash. Then more lava flows filled in forested valleys. By the end of it, fields of corn lay buried, the landscape had undergone a fairly dramatic makeover, and the severely surprised Sinagua had discovered?the art of basalt corn cobble making. They relocated to points less explosive nearby, where a beautiful new volcano formed a backdrop and gave a fertility boost to their fields.

These things happen when you live in the San Francisco Volcanic field.

This digital elevation model (DEM) of the San Francisco Volcanic Field shows many of the more than 600 vents which have erupted in the area during the past 6 million years. Some lava flows (flat lobate features) are easily recognized by their proximity to vents. Larger tectonic structures such as the northeast-trending Mesa Butte Fault and Doney Fault are also seen. Flagstaff lies at the south-central edge of the volcanic field nestled between the base of Elden Mountain and the Observatory Mesa flow emitted from A-1 Mountain. Image courtesy USGS.

Northern Arizona would be a flat, arid plateau if it wasn?t for the hot spot beneath it. For 6 million years, volcanoes have erupted here, steadily marching east. The field extends from Williams in the west to the banks of the Little Colorado River in the east, and from just below Flagstaff in the south nearly to Cameron in the north ? an area of roughly 1,800 square miles. It contains the highest point in Arizona ? 12,633? Humphreys Peak ? as well as the youngest volcano, Sunset Crater. If you?re looking for a particular type of volcano, chances are the San Francisco Volcanic Field has it, from lava domes to a stratovolcano to dozens of cinder cones of all shapes and sizes. With 600+ volcanoes to choose from, you can?t complain. And if you?re really lucky, you might get a chance to see a new volcano born, since the field?s still potentially active. Geologists think any future eruptions will be small enough to get a spectacular show without inconveniencing the locals?too much.

Sunset Crater would have put on quite the show itself. The six mile long?curtain of fireserved as the opening act, and while it probably wasn?t quite as vigorous as many Hawaiian fissure eruptions, brilliant red lava shooting up from the ground is still an impressive sight. But that was merely the prelude. Activity along the fissure slowed quickly, becoming concentrated at the northern end, where the?real?show was starting. Explosions ejected fragments of lava high into the air; as those fragments cooled mid-air, the dissolved gasses within them exsolved and created dozens of vesticles, peppering the fragments with petrified bubbles. They rained down around the vent, piling into a cone. The heat, the smell, and the noise would have been overwhelming.

We have a good idea what the Sinagua saw. It would have been quite a bit like Paricut?n?s birth:

Loud, isn?t it? One begins to understand why the Sinagua fed it corn: I imagine they were trying desperately to calm it down.

If they found a good vantage point on nearby mountains, they might have seen bits of the newly-birthed crater rafting away on lava flows. You can still see chunks of?red oxidized agglutinate, pieces of the original cone, trapped in the Bonito flow.

Red oxidized agglutinate in the Bonito Lava Flow, Sunset Crater, AZ. Image courtesy Cujo359.

The explosions continued, filling Sunset Crater?s gaping wounds with fresh scoria, and leaving the volcano with smooth, unblemished flanks.

As the eruption waned, something wonderful happened. Fumaroles formed near the crater?s rim, venting hot gasses that oxidized the basalt scoria. The iron contained within basically rusted, painting the rim in gorgeous sunset colors. The fumaroles cemented the rim with?silica,?gypsum and iron oxide; as a finishing touch, they deposited?sulfur compounds,?opal,?hematite,?jarosite, and?magnetite. Nature had created a masterpiece.

When all was said and done, the volcano topped out at 1000 feet in height, a mile in width, and contained a crater 400 feet deep, which itself hosts a 160 foot deep secondary crater. The local Sinagua might have considered it a decent consolation prize for getting volcanically evicted from their forested valley.

The visible?interior of Sunset Crater is covered with a smooth coating of scoria, but we can get a look inside her if we head over to Red Mountain, many miles to the west.

Red Mountain cinder cone, near Flagstaff, AZ. Check out that interior! Image courtesy Cujo359.

This is the eroded interior of a cinder cone. Steam and percolating water welded its layers of cinder and ash together with the same sorts of mineral oxides that cemented Sunset Crater, creating a volcanic material called?tuff. We get this inside-look at the anatomy of a cinder cone because the entire western side of Red Mountain got itself rafted away by a lava flow, leaving an enormous ampitheater carved out of the cone. This time, there was wasn?t any explosive action to replace the missing bits.

Lava can do some pretty outrageous things. And thanks to Northern Arizona?s cool, dry climate, we can get a nearly unweathered view of its antics. Rain and snowmelt just sink right in without disturbing the surface of the flows too much. If it wasn?t for the lichens and hardy bushes peppering the flows, you?d think they?d just erupted last week.

The Bonito Lava Flow, Sunset Crater, AZ.

Most of the flows around Sunset Crater are composed of a?a lava. There is a good reason why the Hawaiians call it a?a, which means, basically, ?stony, rough lava.? It?s a stony, rough lava comprised of clinker, broken chunks of lava carried along the top by a dense, pasty core. As?that hotter core oozes its way downslope, the clinker goes along for the ride, tumbling over the leading edge like a bunch of over-excited kids at a slow-motion water park. The tumbled chunks get buried as the flow ambles on. Thus, you get a sort of lava sandwich: clinker top and bottom, paste in the middle. Don?t bite into a fresh flow, though: it?s erupting at temperatures of 1000-1100 degrees C. That?s 1800-2000 degrees F. That?s bloody?hot.

Back when I was a wee kiddie, our teachers showed us a video of an a?a flow filmed in Iceland. I?ll never forget the sound. As the clinker tumbles, it makes a cacophony like a monstrous china cabinet getting knocked over. This video from Hawaii demonstrates that nicely:

?

Is that, or is that not, simply awesome?

There are two ways a?a is formed from a basalt flow. One of them is when the basalt is high in gas bubbles and (relatively) low in temperature, thus high in viscosity. The other is when the strain rate of the flow is high ? such as when it hits steep ground. Remember this, as it will factor in to the following discussion.

Sunset Crater?s lava flows weren?t limited to a?a. The Bonito flow began close to the western margin of the volcano as pahoehoe, a Hawaiian word meaning ?smooth, unbroken lava.? It?s a far more liquid basalt that forms a beautiful, smooth surface, sculpted into undulating billows or ropy loops. It forms that way because of the way very fluid lava moves under a congealing surface crust. It?s hot stuff, 1100-1200 degrees C (2000-2100 degrees F), with a low gas bubble content.

Now, the interesting thing is this: pahoehoe can easily turn to a?a, depending on how the flow goes. If pahoehoe hits an uphill climb, it?ll cool down, slow down, and get all clinkered up. Same thing can happen as the flow cools further from its eruption site. Isn?t that neat?

You can get an idea of what something like that looks like from this video of pahoehoe and a?a flows merging:

Pahoehoe also means ?good to walk? in Hawaiian. When I was a kid visiting the Crater, our field trip guide explained the name origins thusly: the Hawaiians, walking barefoot over flows, would try to tiptoe over the rough stuff, exclaiming: ?Ah! Ah!? And then, when their feet hit the smooth, soothing surface, they?d sigh in relief: ?Mmmm, pahoehoe!?

You?ll never forget the difference now, will you?

The Bonito flow turned from pahoehoe to a?a as it lost its gas on the trip out from the mountain. Big cracks formed in its surface from the frictional drag of the liquid lava below the cooler crust, and as that weak crust collapsed when lava drained away from beneath it. It?s the youngest and biggest of Sunset Crater?s two flows. It covers almost two square miles, and ranges from 100 feet deep in its center to less than 6 feet along the margins. It filled in a basin surrounded by older volcanoes. The other major flow, Kana?a, flowed down an old stream bed for several miles, and never got more than 1000 feet wide. Sunset Crater?s continued eruptions covered it in cinders, allowing a lot more vegetation to take root along its surface. Both flows, as well as the cinders, are alkai olivine basalt, which is composed of microscopic crystals of?plagioclase,?olivine and?augite. The occasional big white chunk of stone embedded in the basalt is a?xenolith, in this case formed when lava ripped a hunk of Kaibab limestone out of the underlying formations and took it along for the ride.

Crack in the Bonito Flow. This stuff's rough!

The Bonito lava flow is where you?ll see most of the interesting formations. For a crash course in lava, there?s nothing better than the trail that meanders through it. You can take?an online field trip, but we?ll hit some of the high points here.

A squeeze-up in the Bonito Lava Flow. Image courtesy Cujo359.

If you?ve never used ?lava? and ?toothpaste? in the same sentence before, that?s probably because you?ve never seen a squeeze-up. These form when gummy, partially-cooled lava squeezes its way through already-hardened cracks in the flow. It?s pretty much the consistency of toothpaste. A close inspection will show you the marks left as it scrapes by the solid stone around it.

Lava from the Bonito Flow displaying the tell-tale grooves from being squeezed up like so much toothpaste.

The Bonito flow also contains lava tubes, formed when molten rock drained from its solidified surroundings. Those tubes are cold ? basalt?s a terrible material for trapping heat. In colder, wetter Arizona days, the tubes used to contain ice full time. Now, they?re usually dry, but frigid. Alas, Bonito?s main tube collapsed some time ago, so you can?t go exploring it anymore. This is good news for the claustrophobic set, not such good news for the spelunkers among us.

You can console yourself with a hornito.

A hornito on the Bonito Lava Flow. Image courtesy Cujo359.

Yes, I know most of you associate the word ?hornito? with tequila, for good reason ? Hornitos is an excellent brand. In this case, though, hornito means a small spatter cone formed on the surface of a basalt flow. It?s created when lava is forced up through the cooled surface. Hornitos are fed by the flow itself, rather than its own magma source as is the case with a regular spatter cone. They?re steep-sided heaps of splattered lava that splashed down and over the developing cone, welding itself as it goes. The lava?s still partially liquid when it falls, which is why it doesn?t form distinct cinders, although the principle?s roughly the same.

Watching one form is a fascinating experience:

Sunset Crater?s hornito used to be taller, but volcanoes aren?t all that good at welding, and people broke it down by sitting on it and taking away chunks. It?s still an impressive feature, though.

Just past the hornito, you?ll catch sight of something that looks like a mini-cinder cone. It?s a cinder dune. This gives you some idea of just how much material Sunset Crater ejected.

Cinder dune at Sunset Crater. Image courtesy Cujo359.

Sunset Crater is a geologists? dream. There are few places in the continental United States where volcanism is so wonderfully demonstrated, without all the pesky plants in the way. And, just over the horizon, ancient oceans lie exposed, and prehistoric apartments look out over Painted Desert vistas.

But that?s a story for another Sunday Sensational Science. For now, I?ll just leave you with a portrait of Sunset Crater and her lava flows, and let you ponder the power of hot rock to create a work of art:

Sunset Crater, seen from the trail through the Bonito Lava Flow.

Debt Negotiation or Debt Consolidation? - Business Negotiation

11:00 PM By Article Directory

'; div.innerHTML = summary; } //]]> Debt Negotiation or Debt Consolidation? Debt Negotiation or Debt Consolidation?

Debt negotiation and consolidation are choices available to anyone who requires debt assistance. If your bills have grown out of your control, should you utilize debt consolidation? Debt negotiation? One of these may abolish your debt and credit problems if chosen carefully.

Debt Negotiation

Debt negotiation is often called debt settlement. This is given to those who can't keep up with a debt consolidation program. In the event that you don't feel you can meet the minimum payments of a consolidation plan, a debt negotiation program is the best alternative to reducing debt and credit problems.

One appeal of debt negotiation programs is that you'll be able to stop making payments to your creditors. The debt negotiation company will take monthly payments from you and store them in an account.

While you're making monthly payments to the debt negotiation company, they negotiate with the creditors for a lower pay rate of as little as 40% of the total debt. When the settlement is reached with your creditors, the company makes a one-time payment.

The drawback here is that debt negotiation programs will lower your credit score for as long as you're enrolled in the program. Most negotiation companies obligate the creditor to compile a credit report noting that the debt was fully paid so as not to appear as a negative credit mark after the account is settled.

Certain debt negotiation companies even include a credit repair service that will remove the harmful marks left by the program. This is a service which is usually included.

Debt Consolidation

Debt consolidation grants custom debt repayment plans with most credit card and collection companies. When applying to a debt consolidation company, you're proposed a lower average monthly payment, and this is built on an even lower interest rate accepted by the creditor.

Your new payment will be better than what your credit card companies allow, saving you money every month. This is usually the ideal way to consolidate debt.

An obvious attraction of a debt consolidation payment plan is that it'll prevent you from being harassed by creditors as long as you continue to make the new payments on schedule.

However, the drawback of the plan is cancelling all credit cards included in the plan.

Also, you'll be charged your first payment for the program and an extra monthly administration fee. Fees vary between flat rates of ten to fifty dollars, while others will charge a simple five dollar fee for each creditor. This amounts to about thirty dollars a month that isn't going directly to paying off debt.

A debt consolidation program will aid you if you suffer from lofty interest rates or loftier credit card bills than you can overcome. It's usually more convenient for everyone to make a single payment for all bills.

Hopefully the differences between debt consolidation and debt negotiation are a little clearer and will aid you in your journey to become debt free. For even further in-depth strategies, visit The Only Way Out of Debt [http://www.vsfights.com].

Red Cross chief exits after taking on Bush, Bashar

GENEVA (Reuters) - He struck a unique deal with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, fought what he viewed as excesses in the U.S. "war on terror", compiled reports that exposed U.S. mistreatment of detainees in Iraq, and fought for inmates' rights at Guantanamo.

Jakob Kellenberger, who describes himself as "the negotiator of last resort", steps down on Friday after 12 years as president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

The independent aid agency's 12,500 staff perform frontline humanitarian operations, delivering food and medical care in war zones from Syria to Somalia.

Kellenberger's tenure was marked by conflicts triggered by the Sept 11, 2001 attacks and U.S. efforts to capture or kill al Qaeda militants abroad, including by drone attacks. It ends with the prospect of Syria descending into full-blown civil war.

"When I look back, it was a very central issue, the whole issue of what the (President George) Bush administration called the global war on terror," Kellenberger, 67, said in an interview in his office in the ICRC's Geneva headquarters.

"The basic balance between military necessity and humanity and respect for human dignity was broken in some places and in other places it was in serious danger. I had really the feeling that you had to fight against this from the start," he said.

Noting that many of his files relate to fighting in Afghanistan and the Middle East, he added: "It's almost a bit symbolic that it ends with this region, with Syria, but before it was Lebanon, Israel, the (Palestinian) territories."

The Bush administration, which invaded Afghanistan in late 2001 and Iraq in March 2003, openly questioned the relevance of the Geneva Conventions to al Qaeda and Taliban fighters, a challenge to the ICRC which is the guardian of the 1949 rules of war that aim to protect civilians and prisoners of war.

In Afghanistan, the ICRC quickly gained access to visit U.S.-held detainees in Kandahar and Bagram, and to those sent to the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo, Cuba, without being charged.

Its confidential reports on U.S. mistreatment of detainees in Iraq, including at Abu Ghraib, appeared in the Wall Street Journal in 2004, sparking an international outcry.

"It was very difficult for us, it was a typical dilemma of confidential issues. What came out after in photos, what became public, was in fact already part of the ICRC reports from visits to Abu Ghraib to the end of 2003 but were confidential reports, for U.S. authorities and nobody else," he said.

CONFIDENTIAL ACCESS

Worldwide, the ICRC visited more than 540,000 detainees last year in 75 countries.

They included Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi who was captured on the run in the desert, and former Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo.

The only international agency to deliver assistance in Syria, the ICRC has visited prisons in Damascus and Aleppo. It is still seeking access to all detainees held by both sides.

Kellenberger has gone to Syria three times in the past nine months to negotiate better access, and has held two meetings with Assad. The ICRC has said that local civil wars have raged in Hama, Homs and Idlib, but that there is not yet an overall civil war, a view some politicians feel is too qualified.

"I'm really afraid that political efforts will be too slow ... I am afraid that we go down the way to a country-wide internal armed conflict," he said.

On Tuesday, aid workers from the ICRC and Syrian Red Crescent were on their way to Homs to evacuate trapped civilians and wounded from the old city, but negotiations were still under way to secure safe access.

That task now falls to Kellenberger's successor, Peter Maurer, another senior Swiss diplomat, who takes over on July 1.

The ICRC's internal rules stipulate that its interviews with inmates - meant to evaluate their treatment and conditions of detention in a bid to prevent torture - are private. In exchange, the agency only shares its findings with the detaining authorities.

"I do continue to strongly believe that in the long-run confidentiality as a tool remains extremely important to have access to detainees but also to have access to certain regions," Kellenberger said.

"But I have also to admit it is clear that the publication of what happened in Abu Ghraib had large effects, in the good sense. Because I mean in some quarters of the American authorities they became very much aware that there were things to be changed."

Kellenberger, who held talks with George W. Bush and Donald Rumsfeld on Guantanamo and other issues, said that Washington had been open to discussions, even to "very critical dialogue".

Despite "deep divergences of view on legal and protection matters" the United States never threatened to pull the plug on the ICRC, to which it is a major donor, he said.

Two months ago, Kellenberger held talks with President Barack Obama about concerns over U.S. detainees and other issues.

"That was a very positive meeting. In fact I said to him that I felt very grateful that they were always so supportive even if I was aware that I was a very difficult guy.

"Then he told me, 'Please remain difficult'," he recalled with a laugh. (Editing by Andrew Osborn)

Israel and Russia: Trade and restive Arab world outweigh differences on Iran

Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Israel today for a two-day visit that publicly emphasizes the dramatic reconciliation and galloping economic cooperation between Moscow and Jerusalem. In private, it likely featured some harsh words between Mr. Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the Kremlin's political support for Syria and Iran.

Experts say that the geopolitical differences between Russia and Israel are not as deep as many people believe. With the exception of sharp disagreement over what to do about Iran's alleged drive for nuclear weapons, differences are greatly overshadowed by a growing array of commonalities.

Topping that list is a shared sense that Russia and Israel alone fully understand the menace of Islamist extremism. Israel believes it confronts extremism on a daily basis, and Putin sees it as a serious threat to Russia's territorial integrity emanating from the restive northern Caucasus region, whose population is mainly Sunni Muslim. Both feel increasingly isolated in the Middle East, with Egypt's new Muslim Brotherhood president hinting that he might revise his country's treaty with Israel, and Russia facing unprecedented hostility from Turkey and the Arab world over its continued support of Syria's strongman Bashar al-Assad.

QUIZ ? Vladimir Putin 101: How much do you know about Russia's president?

"The worse Russia's relations with the Arab world, the better they will be with Israel," says Fyodor Lukyanov, editor of Russia in Global Affairs, a leading Moscow-based foreign policy journal.

"Russia now finds itself at odds with almost all the Arab countries over Syria, and this could be a long-term trend. Syria is the last Russian client state inherited from the Soviet Union, and it's probably not going to last. New rulers will be far more mistrustful of Russia, and if they are Islamists the feelings will be mutual. At least when they're talking about the threat of radical Islam, Putin will feel mentally very close with Netanyahu," he says.

TOURISM, TRADE BOOST RELATIONSHIP

Putin's first stop after arriving in Israel today was the dedication of a monument to Soviet Red Army forces killed in World War II in Netanya. Putin told a crowd of about 600 people that the double-winged white dove erected by Israel "symbolizes the triumph of good and peace. May these values always serve as the basis for friendship between our nations."

Since the collapse of the USSR, the Russian narrative about World War II ? that the Red Army liberated eastern Europe from Naziism ? has been painfully challenged by many former allies whose new version of history sees the arrival of Soviet forces as the beginning of a new occupation.

"Israel is one of the few countries in the world that fully backs the Russian view on World War II, so for Putin the symbolism here is very important," says Dmitry Maryasis, an expert with the Israeli Studies Department of the official Institute of Oriental Studies in Moscow. "The role of the Red Army in liberating Europe is not often celebrated these days, so Russians will receive this signal very warmly."

During the cold war, the USSR supported rejectionist Arab states and the Palestinians against Israel, a position that had ideological roots in the competition between Zionism and Communism in 20th century Europe. But the ideological dimension disappeared with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the emigration of more than 1 million Russian speakers to Israel in the 1990s, even before Russia's ties with authoritarian Arab states were moderated by improving economic and political ties with Israel and the West.

"Everything has changed since the end of the USSR, and the relationship with Israel is totally transformed," says Yevgeny Satanovsky, president of the independent Institute for Middle Eastern Studies in Moscow. "In Israel, one in seven citizens is Russian-speaking. There are now many prominent Russian-speakers, even at high levels of power, who have feelings of closeness toward Russia. In Moscow, there is no more official anti-Semitism and leaders are pragmatic. In some ways, such as the attitude toward the threat from radical Islamism, we are even closer in our views than Israel is with the US."

Trade has burgeoned; Israeli exports to Russia grew almost fourfold between 2003 and 2008, reaching $3 billion. That may not sound like much, but the areas of economic cooperation under consideration include nanotechnology, energy, and joint military projects, including the production of unmanned drone warplanes. Russia's natural gas monopoly Gazprom is eyeing offshore gas deposits in Israel, while the state-owned Russian Railroads is hoping to participate in a new Tel Aviv-Eilat high speed rail link.

SUPPORTING THE 'DEVIL THEY KNOW'

Putin later met with Netanyahu for a full discussion about Syria and Iran that both leaders characterized as detailed and friendly. Experts say that on Syria, at least, the two sides may not be all that far apart.

"Israel supports the Western position that Assad must go, while Russia has been backing Assad," says Mr. Maryasis. "But they're probably much closer than you would think. Israel is not keen to see a big mess break out on its border with Syria ? along the Golan Heights ? which has been relatively stable for years. Israel might actually prefer the devil it knows, Assad, to what might follow him. There is a very palpable fear in Israel that radical Islamists might follow Assad, and everything will get worse."

Likewise, experts say, Russia's occasional contacts with Islamist groups Hamas and Hezbollah, as well as its efforts to advocate for the Palestinian cause, are no longer viewed in Jerusalem as Soviet-style mischief, but merely the same sort of pragmatism practiced by other powers.

"Russia has always said that its participation is central to any future Middle East settlement, but in reality there's not much Moscow can do," says Georgy Mirsky, an expert at the Institute for World Economy and International relations, Moscow's most important official research center. "At the same time, relations with Israel are moving forward, powered by growing numbers of Russian businessmen and a flow of tourists ? Russia is the second biggest source of tourists to Israel these days ? and much improved dialogue on the official level."

Iran remains the single major sticking point. Experts say that Netanyahu will probably have given Putin an earful on the need for tougher sanctions and perhaps military measures to stop Iran's nuclear program, while Putin will have urged caution.

"Russia is deeply skeptical that military measures against Iran can have any lasting effect, and is very worried that a war could spread into Russia's own northern Caucasus," says Mr. Satanovsky. "Russia worries that it will cause regional disruption, refugee flows, and no one knows what else might come in the wake of an attack on Iran. This is the one big point on which Russia and Israel are doomed to disagree, and go on disagreeing."

Learning about Personal Budgeting Tools

Personal budgeting is one of the most essential aspects of personal finance. If you can master the act of effective budgeting, you can stay substantially in control of your finance. In essence, effective budgeting helps you to know how you spend your income, and what you spend it on. A personal budgeting skill is an essential part of financial literacy for individuals.

What is Personal Budget?

When you embark on a finance plan that assigns your income to expenses, debt repayment, savings, investment and other categories, you are carrying out a personal budgeting. A personal budget incorporates both personal spending and past spending. Personal budgeting is accomplished with wide range of tools and techniques. In essence, you can find tools and strategies for either creating a fresh personal budget or adjusting an existing one.

?

Sample Budget

Typically, your budget will allocate your expected earning to categories such as expected expenses, intended investment, intended savings and more. Here?s a sample of typical personal budget illustrated below;

?

Category Percentage (%) Monthly Amount Annual Amount

?

Gross Income

?

Taxes

?

Net Income

?

Food

?

Housing

?

Insurance

?

Auto

?

Debt repayment

?

Savings

?

Medical

?

Investments

?

There are more elements to be included into the budget categories such as school/children care, clothing, entertainment and recreation, and miscellaneous. You may also choose to modify your budget accordingly.

?

Personal Budgeting Tools

In creating a viable budget, there are wide range of tools you can find helpful. It doesn?t matter the tool you employ, you must bear in mind that the accuracy of any personal budget is only equally good as the updated budget data?s accuracy; hence, if an old budget does not show the exact income or expenses, it would be almost valueless to the current budget. Recently, people have massively embraced the computer-generated budgets. Consequently, the need to write the budget all over again and start the calculation afresh (just to reflect new changes) has been eliminated.

?

Here are essential tools for budget;

  • Paper and Pencil; to create a simple budget, you will need a piece of paper and pencil. Also, you can bring a calculator in case you have a need for it. A simpler option is to use the pre-formatted bookkeeping or household budgeting forms. This option enables you to create a budget by simply supplying the right details in the blanks.

  • Spreadsheet tools; these will help you create a budget based on need. Subsequently, the calculations are performed with ease using the rudimentary formulas in-built to the spreadsheet software. Typical example of spreadsheet tools include MS Excel, OpenOffice.org Calc, iWork Numbers and more. If you want to monitor your income and expenses, the budget spreadsheet will be ideal for the task. However, a lot of people do not employ budget spreadsheets any longer, due to the absence of date-shifting feature that eliminates the need to re-enter or move information at each month?s end. But, spreadsheet still remains a viable budgeting tool when complex budgets and planning are involved.

Other personal budgeting tools are money management software, spending management software and money management websites. You will learn about these tools in subsequent posts. ?

(AP) ? Greece's new prime minister will not be well enough to travel to a critical EU summit in Brussels after undergoing an eye operation, the government said Sunday.

Antonis Samaras, 61, underwent surgery for a detached retina for nearly four hours Saturday, just three days after being sworn in at the head of a three-party coalition government formed after two inconclusive general elections.

The doctor treating the prime minister, Panagiotis Theodosiadis, has ruled out him being able to travel to Brussels for the June 28-29 European Union summit, government spokesman Simos Kedikoglou said.

"Before the surgery, (Samaras) said, 'You do your job, and I do mine, which is to go to the EU summit,'" Theodosiadis said of Samaras. 'I was hoping (Saturday) that he would announce he would not go because it was a very delicate operation. ... He needs to lie at a certain angle for a certain period each day, for at least a week. He can do meetings, but he certainly can't walk," Theodosiadis said, adding that his patient would leave the hospital Monday.

Samaras has appointed new Foreign Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos to head the Greek delegation at the meeting, Kedikoglou said.

The summit could prove a key test of Greek leaders' pledges to renegotiate some terms of the country's international bailout.

Reports that the so-called troika of Greece's lenders ? the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund ? will postpone the visit of its delegation, originally planned for Monday, were not confirmed by Samaras' office. European Commission spokesman Amadeu Altafaj Tardio said that troika staff "will be moving to Athens starting (Monday)."

The debt inspectors are due to review the country's fiscal situation and resume talks that had been put on hold during the country's nearly two-month political deadlock.

Greece's incoming finance minister, Vassilis Rapanos, was also hospitalized Friday after suffering a collapse. A hospital spokeswoman said he was expected to be discharged either late Monday or Tuesday after further tests. But because his swearing in had to be postponed due to his ill-health, outgoing Finance Minister Giorgos Zanias still holds the title and will attend the summit.

Zanias, who was a key negotiator for Greece's bailout deal before being named to the post, will be accompanied by Development Minister Costis Hatzidakis and Alternative Finance Minister Christos Staikouras.

Zanias himself had suffered chest pains and high blood pressure and was hospitalized in October at an EU summit, where he had accompanied then-Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos. The doctors had said he had suffered an anxiety attack. Four days later, an adviser to then-Prime Minister George Papandreou suffered a heart attack during negotiations on Greece's second bailout deal.

Greece has been dependent since May 2010 on funds from two international rescue loan deals with other European Union countries and the International Monetary Fund, in return for which it imposed a series of deep spending cuts and tax hikes.

Anti-bailout parties made massive gains in Greece's May 6 and June 17 elections, with Greeks furious at the drop in living standards by measures that have left the country struggling through a fifth year of recession and sent unemployment spiraling to above 22 percent.

Samaras' conservative New Democracy party came first in both elections, but without enough votes to govern alone. Coalition talks collapsed after 10 days in May, leading to the second ballot.

New Democracy is now in a power-sharing government with longtime socialist PASOK rivals and the small Democratic Left.

The new government on Saturday issued a policy statement outlining what it aims to change in its bailout conditions, saying it would seek to repeal some taxes, halt layoffs and extend by two years the mid-2014 deadline for tough austerity measures.

"The general aim is no more cuts to salaries and pensions, no more taxes," the statement said, adding the government would not carry out any public sector layoffs.

Whether the government can deliver on its pledges will depend on how they are viewed by Greece's international creditors. Germany, the largest single contributor to the bailout, has repeatedly said Athens must stick to its austerity targets.

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble repeated this view Sunday, in an interview to newspaper Bild am Sonntag.

"It must now be the most important task of Prime Minister Samaras' new government to swiftly and immediately implement the agreed program without hesitation or asking, yet again, what the others could do in addition for Greece," German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble was quoted as saying. "The ball is in Greece's field; it is in their hands to achieve that Europe's citizens can regain trust. But this will only be achieved through concrete measures and actions."

The Sunday tabloid published a survey on Greece that it had commissioned with Italy's Corriere della Sera, Spain's ABC and France's Le Journal Du Dimanche.

In it, 78 percent of the Germans polled, 65 percent of the French and about a half of the Italians said Greece should leave the eurozone if it fails to pay its debt.

How to Get Rid of Bloating | HEALTH BENEFITS

Suffering from belly bloat is a common but annoying disorder. You feel uncomfortable, lethargic, unmotivated, embarrassed because of your bulging belly and the rumble it makes, and are sometimes in pain.

Let us look at how to stop bloating and the basic lifestyle changes you can implement which are especially effective if you feel bloated after eating.

Stop overeating

Eat smaller, more frequent meals for better health and a bloat-free waistline.

Change your eating habits

Eating quickly increases pressure on your stomach and produces more gas. Sit down, chew your food well, and eat your meals in a leisurely manner, giving the food plenty of time to digest.

Drinking tea or coffee on the run is equally bad with excess air accompanying each sip and gulp. Savor your beverages by drinking them slowly.

Limit sugar substitutes

Sodas, sweets and chewing gum contain huge quantities of artificial sweeteners, especially sorbitol and xylitol which many people find difficult to digest, resulting in bloating, gas and diarrhea. Rather have real sugar than substitutes.

Cut out sodas

The bubbles in fizzy drinks cause bloating. Also refrain from drinking excessively hot or cold beverages.

Stop eating junk and processed food

Fried, oily food and high salt content cause bloating.

Abstain from carbohydrates at night

Bread and pasta cause you to retain water. Avoid eating them at night to be puff-free the next morning.

Early morning water and lemon juice

Start your day by drinking a glass of warm water with the juice of half a lemon; it speeds up waste elimination and removes toxins.

Eat potassium rich foods

Bananas, cantaloupe, mangoes, spinach, tomatoes, nuts, asparagus and fresh chopped parsley regulate the fluid balance in your body and stop bloating.

If you suffer from constipation, eating sufficient fruit, vegetables and high fiber, such as oatmeal, will improve your digestion and remedy your bloating problem.

Drink water

Water flushes out your system and aids digestion. Instead of alcohol, caffeine and colas, drink plain water and natural teas.

Limit excess air

Do not eat and talk at the same time, drink out of a straw, chew gum nor smoke because the surplus air accompanying these activities causes you to bloat.

Eat foods easily digested by your body

Bland foods, such as fish, chicken, soya based foods, yogurt and rice do not tax your digestive system.

Limit gas producing foods

Notice which raw vegetables cause you to bloat, then either boil them or do not eat them at all. The cellulose in cabbage, peas and beans is hard to digest and may cause you to puff up.

Other common gas producing foods are cruciferous vegetables, root vegetables, lentils, prunes and garlic.

Menstruation

Bloating, together with water weight gain and mood swings, are associated with premenstrual tension. Ensure you get 1200 milligrams calcium and 200 to 400 milligrams magnesium daily. Both nutrients help relieve PMS symptoms, including bloating. If you wish, take Midol which contains a mild diuretic.

Natural remedies

Add turmeric, coriander, caraway and cumin when cooking.

Naturists claim teas made of ginger, savory from the mint family, lime from a linden tree, peppermint, rosemary, and caraway are effective for bloating relief.

They may be right because ginger tea helps with stomach upsets and peppermint oil in tea or warm water after a big meal aids digestion.

Exercise

Walking for 15 to 20 minutes a day moves food through your digestive tract, thereby reducing bloating and combating constipation. Other benefits include less severe menstrual cramps, eliminating toxins by perspiring, and shedding body fat.

Apply pressure

Massaging your abdomen helps evacuate gas and reduces bloating. Start by pressing your fingers near your right hip, slide up towards the ribs, move across and down in a circular motion.

Supplements and home remedies

Taking a digestive enzyme with each meal provides relief, especially when bloating results from a problem with your digestive tract, such as diverticulosis. Obtain digestive enzymes with the active ingredients lipase, protease and amylase, from any health store. Restaurant owners should actually hand out digestive enzymes instead of after-dinner mints to all patrons who selected anything other than raw foods from their menus.

Probiotics are 'good bacteria' which help keep you regular and bloat-free. Your intestinal tract has loads of bacteria, some beneficial, some harmful, which play an important role in the functioning of your digestive and immune systems.

Probiotics encourage the growth and replenishment of healthy microflora. They crowd out the bad bacteria which cause disease, yeasts and parasites in your intestines, they help digest and absorb your food, eliminate wastes and toxins by restoring normal and regular bowel function, and maintain a healthy intestinal function.

Ideally 85% of your bacteria should be friendly with 15% unfriendly. Probiotic supplements can be found in capsule, powder or liquid form, or in foods such as kefir and yogurt.

If you do not consume enough fruit and vegetables, take nutritional supplements that contain dietary fibers especially during the holidays or when celebrating to better handle the foods that cause you to swell up.

Apple cider vinegar helps ease digestive symptoms and gets rid of bloating and gas pain.

Lactobacillus supplements also help maintain intestinal health.

Bismuth, the active ingredient in Pepto-Bismol, is an element on the periodic table. 100% natural, taken before or directly after a meal reduces swelling caused by food allergies and neutralizes the odor of your flatulence.

Medication

If you take antibiotics, which destroy your friendly bacteria, take B complex vitamins too.

Some oral contraceptive pills cause your stomach to distend, in which case ask your physician to prescribe a different one.

Once you incorporate these lifestyle changes, they should cure you or at least relieve bloating.

If your condition persists, let us look at what else it might be and what you can do about it.

Food allergy

If you bloat after eating certain foods, keep a food journal where you write down everything you eat, together with any symptoms which appear. Rotate foods until you identify which foods trigger bloating and avoid them.

Although you may not test positive for food allergies, you may have a food intolerance. Common culprits include yeast, wheat, where the gluten causes excess gas to be produced, and milk.

Lactose intolerance

This means your body does not produce the enzyme lactase and your digestive system cannot digest the lactose in dairy foods. It then ferments and forms gases which overstretch your bowel.

How do you know if you are lactose intolerant? Drink a glass of milk. If you experience gas, bloating or diarrhea, avoid dairy products or drink lactose free milk.

Yogurt's active bacteria cultures produce lactase, so if you want to eat cheese without bloating afterwards, add a bowl of yogurt to your morning ritual.

Irritable bowel syndrome

IBS, characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, constipation and/or diarrhea, may be the cause of your bloating.

Eat more fiber and give up coffee, cigarettes and spicy foods which irritate your colon.

Some people swear by going on a detoxification diet two or three times a year to give your body a chance to cleanse itself of accumulated toxins.

Diabetes

Diabetics often have problems with bloating and diarrhea, especially if they take large doses of metformin or glucophage.

Diabetics with nerve damage in their stomach may find food collects but does not empty properly, resulting in excessive belching. Medication eases this problem.

Medication

Although over-the-counter products offer quick relief by suppressing the symptoms, the benefits will be short-lived because they do not eliminate the cause.

Common effective medications such as Gas-X, Beano, Phazyme and Flatulex, when taken with each meal, help break up gas pockets in the stomach, thereby relieving bloating and gas pain.

The pain is not actually caused by your swollen stomach but by abdominal contractions not synchronizing properly. When your intestinal wall pulls in different directions it feels like stomach cramps.

Most bloating medication contain enzymes like alpha-galactosidase which help digest the sugars in carbohydrates, the main culprit of your indigestion problems.

Pink Pepto-Bismol type products have a salicylate ingredient which is like aspirin. It will alleviate some of your abdominal pain but if it disagrees with you, try Gas-X or Phazyme which contain simethicone.

Activated charcoal

Consider using this over-the-counter supplement. When taken with meals, it prevents or at least reduces the amount of gas produced.

It sometimes causes irregular looking stools and constipation so do not be alarmed, and in case it affects the absorption of prescription medicine, take it an hour or two after any scheduled medication.

Tips and warning

Bloating and gas pain should dissipate quite quickly. If not, if it becomes more than a slight annoyance, or if accompanied by bloody or tarry stools, fever, night sweats or weight loss, consult your doctor.

He might suggest a colonoscopy to help him diagnose your problem. Endure it because your colon plays a major role in your life and until it is sorted out, you will feel unwell. Once he determines the medical cause, he will treat and cure you of your suffering.[Refer:singlecupcoffeemakerschoice.com]

Hedge fund manager to pay $405M to Madoff victims

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? A settlement announced Sunday will bring $405 million to victims of Bernard Madoff's historic investment scam, the state attorney general said.

The clients of hedge fund manager J. Ezra Merkin will receive $405 million, and New York state will get $5 million to cover the cost of the settlement worked out by Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. The victims include New York Law School, Bard College, Harlem Children's Zone, Homes for the Homeless and the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty.

Schneiderman called the agreement "a victory for justice and accountability."

"Many New Yorkers entrusted their investments to Mr. Merkin, who then steered the money to Madoff while receiving millions of dollars in management and incentive fees," Schneiderman said. "By holding Mr. Merkin accountable, this settlement will help bring justice for the people and institutions that lost millions of dollars."

Merkin's attorney, Andrew J. Levander, didn't immediately respond to a request for comment Sunday.

Merkin had managed investments for hundreds of investors in four funds: Ariel Fund Ltd., Gabriel Capital L.P., Ascot Fund Ltd. and Ascot Partners L.P. Schneiderman said many of the investors are New York residents and charitable organizations. Many of them requested not to be identified.

Most investors will get more than 40 percent of their losses, but only up to $5 million. Those who lost more could see additional payments, depending on the number of investors who seek reimbursement. Investors will see the terms of the settlement in the next few days, the attorney general's office said.

Merkin used his social and charitable contacts and his reputation as a money manager over two decades to raise more than $4 billion from investors, many of them charitable groups. Schneiderman said Merkin concealed Madoff's role through misleading documents and quarterly reports.

Madoff, once the Nasdaq chairman, used his reputation and savvy to dupe sophisticated investors, regulators and Wall Street banks. Merkin invested more than $2 billion with Madoff, who used money from new investors to pay returns to previous clients.

A Schneiderman spokesman said he can't speculate on the effect of the settlement on other investors who lost millions of dollars.

A Manhattan judge in September noted that the plaintiffs had cited testimony by Merkin that he was aware of a number of people who were suspicious of the returns Madoff claimed to achieve.

Madoff confessed in December 2008 that he was running a multi-decade Ponzi scheme and that more than $65 billion he claimed to have on hand for investors had dwindled to a few hundred million dollars from an original investment of about $20 billion. He pleaded guilty to fraud and is serving a 150-year prison sentence in Butner, N.C.

Stocks rebound from biggest drop in weeks

By msnbc.com news services

Stocks rebounded Friday, led by gains in bank shares, as the S&P 500 index bounced back from its second-worst decline of the year.

The benchmark index slid 2.2 percent on Thursday, its biggest drop since June 1, on signs of a global slowdown in manufacturing growth.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed Friday up 71 points.

Bank shares, among the worst hit on Thursday, rose after Moody's Investors Service announced credit downgrades, ranging from one to three notches, for 15 of the world's largest banks. The downgrades reflected the banks' risk of losses from volatile capital market activities.

"It was such a hard sell-off yesterday, a relentless sell-off with a lot of downside volume at the close. Coming out of that, you usually get at least some kind of a rebound," said Tim Ghriskey, chief investment officer of Solaris Asset Management in Bedford Hills, New York.

"As for Moody's downgrade, it was pretty much expected. The focus continues to be Europe at this point."

Boosting market sentiment, leaders of Germany, France, Italy and Spain agreed on a 130 billion euros ($156 billion) package to revive growth in the region.

Merck & Co was the top points gainer on the S&P 500.

Facebook shares, which Russell named in its preliminary list of additions to the Russell 3000 index, have rallied over 25 percent since June 5. The shares rose again Friday, but were still off from the $38 initial public offering price.

Darden Restaurants Inc fell after the operator of Olive Garden and Red Lobster restaurant chains reported sales that missed estimates and forecast weaker-than-expected profits.

Claire McCarthy, M.D.: Life Lessons from Tee Ball

My son's tee ball season is drawing to a close. There is only one more game left, and I'm a little sad; it's been fun watching the kids play (fave moment: instead of running home when his teammate joined him at third base, Liam kindly moved over to make room for him).

Looking back on the season, it got me thinking that besides offering exercise for the kids and entertainment for the parents, tee ball offers some really important life lessons.

When trying new things, just do your best. Liam was pretty terrified at the beginning. I don't blame him; it's scary to be up at bat with everyone looking at you, or be playing first base (the only place anybody seems to throw the ball to in tee ball). All you can ever do in those moments is your best, we told him. Don't worry about being perfect. Hopefully he will remember that as he goes through life.

2012-06-10-liamtball.jpgPay attention. If you don't, you'll miss the play and let your team down. Or get hit with the ball. Another excellent life lesson.

Instead of fighting over the ball, remember that you are a team. It happened all the time at the beginning: The ball would get hit and the entire team would descend onto it in one big pile. "You're on the same team!" the coaches would say, to no avail. They got better, but it was interesting to me how hard it was for them to learn that they shouldn't literally be fighting their teammates for the ball. Then again, it's one of the tougher lessons to learn in life, too.

Be a good sport. Cheer for your teammates. Don't get angry or upset if you have to use the tee (some kids insisted on more tries even after missing lots of pitches). Play the position your coach asks you to, even if you aren't happy about it (there were no outs in their games, so we didn't have to deal with that -- next year we will). Always be nice to the other team, no matter how they treat you. Again, tough but important lessons to learn.

Small achievements matter. At the game yesterday, the coach gave medals to all the kids on the team. Liam was bursting with pride. "I'm pretty happy with myself, " he told me on the way home. "I got a medal." And just as I started to think: yeah, well, everyone did, I realized that Liam had accomplished quite a bit in this first season. He figured out how to hold a bat and even hit a pitched ball sometimes. He knew how to use a mitt, caught the ball way more than he used to and had developed reasonable aim when throwing it back. He knew how to run the bases, even if he sometimes forgot that he was supposed to touch each one as he did. He knew the basics of fielding a ball and where he should throw it. That is a lot for a 6-year-old.

We tend to lose sight of this as we get older; we tend to think that something isn't an achievement unless it gives us recognition or money or otherwise makes us stand out from the crowd. But trying something new, reaching a goal, stretching ourselves even just a little -- these are achievements too. All of a sudden, I was really grateful to have a tee ball player.

"I'm pretty happy with you, too," I said.
