Dealers wanting to sell Ford's first all-electric car must Focus on the environment

Dealers wanting to sell Ford's first all-electric car must Focus on the environment

You can't just sell the new 2012 Ford Focus Electric, you've got to embrace what it stands for, or at least that's what Dearborn is telling its dealers. Per the company HQ, outfits hoping to offer the electric hatchback on their lots later this year must send sales staff through a special electric vehicle training program. What's more, all dealerships carrying the electric Focus must install a minimum of two EV charging stations on their premises and enroll in Ford's Go Green program. Go Green, which has been optional up to this point, looks to improve the sustainability and efficiency of shops, regardless of age. So far, 76 dealerships in California, New Jersey and New York (the initial launch markets) have stepped up to the plate and will be selling the EV. Ford's hoping to capture the hearts and minds of those with electric personalities who haven't already settled for on the competition from Nissan.

Nancy Beatie: I'm Broke and Homeless!

The strange case of Thomas Beatie - an individual born as a woman, but known as The Pregnant Man for undergoing gender reassignment surgeries during pregnancy and soon after - is only growing stranger.

Earlier this month, we reported that Thomas and wife Nancy were separated. Then, it came out that the former has filed divorce documents in which he accuses the latter of assault.

Now, TMZ reports that Nancy Beatie is broke and homeless, often living out of her car.

Thomas and Nancy Beatie

"I'm house sitting right now, cleaning it for another two days… but I don't know where I'll go after that," Nancy tells the site of her predicament, adding that she's been pawning possessions for cash. "I have some junk gold that I grabbed when I had to leave... broken rings and bracelets, not worth much but it's a start."

Thomas alleges that Nancy is a violent alcoholic who has assaulted him, unprovoked, on numerous occasions. A judge has granted him a restraining order against his estranged wife, limiting her time with the couple's three kids.

A May 7 hearing regarding spousal support and custody will be the next step for the troubled couple.

Is this RIM's BlackBerry 10 development device?

Image

You know the drill -- grab yourself a spoonful of Morton's and get ready for another supposed leak of a gadget. This time around, you're looking at what's claimed as being one of Research In Motion's BlackBerry 10 "Development Alpha" devices that'll be handed out during next week's BlackBerry Jam -- just like the company promised a month ago. Images of the device first surfaced over at Crackberry's forums and, as the site points out, the touchscreen candy bar seems to share its design DNA with the PlayBook. Keeping in mind that it's likely to remain a testing device for devs, don't bank on it ever hitting store shelves. That said, we're now curious how pivotal a roll RIM's famous tactile keyboards will play on its next-generation phones -- if any. Head over to the source links below if you'd like to catch more photos from Mr. Blurrycam and extra information in the meantime.

Viddy Is Raising $30M At A $370M Valuation

Screen Shot 2012-04-26 at 9.08.27 PMSomeone wise once said "If Instagram for video were to happen it would look nothing like Instagram" but, because it was on Twitter, I briefly saw that tweet before it got lost in the ether and now I can't find it dammit. But whoever said this is right (please reach out if was you, I want to give you credit) and also didn't tell Viddy, which for the most part looks exactly like Instagram for video. Fine. Anyways, people have been?reporting?all over the place about Viddy's current insane Series A so I guess I (and you) should care. And quite honestly, I (and you) totally should really care because it more money than I've ever seen. Seriously, ever seen. Which means co-founders JJ Aguhob?and?Brett O'Brien?might just be right and onto something, so ..

'American Idol' Report Card: Joshua Ledet Soars Again, Hollie Cavanagh Climbs

The top six tackled Queen songs and their own picks; here's how they did.
By Gil Kaufman

Joshua Ledet performs on "American Idol"
Photo: FOX

It was clear from the opening medley on Wednesday night that Queen night was going to be a struggle a few of the "American Idol" top six. Ironically, it was the three leading contenders
, Joshua Ledet, Skylar Laine and Jessica Sanchez who seemed most uncomfortable, which did note bode well for the evening.

With the only real sort of-rocker, Colton Dixon
, booted last week, that meant it was do-or-die time for anyone hoping to make it to next month's finale. And despite a shaky start, Ledet may have punched his card to the finale, where he is likely to face slow-and-steady Phillip Phillips, while Sanchez and Laine just kind of coasted.

Despite what Steven and Jennifer said time and again, none of these performances are likely to go into the "Idol" all-time vault, but a decent night all around. So, who deserves a coronation? Who fell down and broke their crown? Read on for our "American Idol" report card!

Joshua Ledet: Once again, Ledet nailed it, taking a song that could have seriously tripped him up and wrestling it to the ground with some old-school soul. The bass-slapping Sam Cooke run through "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" was crazy good and the vintage mic was a real nice touch. This dude's got it so in the bag that he sang an obscure India.Arie song, "Ready For Love" that features the lyric "respects the spirit world," and he still killed it (softly). The only way this guy doesn't make it to the finale is if his voicebox has a run-in with Metta World Peace's elbow. A

Jessica Sanchez: "Bohemian Rhapsody"? Wow, really Bebe? The Polly Pocket diva picked the dragon slayer and, well, brought a dagger to a sword fight. The first part sounded like a Beyoncé B-side, with a kind of cool R&B flavor, but once the dinky pyro blasted and she "rocked" it up, well, it was all high school musical. Steven said it best, "rock isn't your forte." Sanch pulled the military veteran daddy's girl card for the Luther Vandross power ballad "Dance With My Father" and predictably blew it out the box. She actually held back, which was a sly, impressively professional move for a kid who might not even have her driver's license yet. If the girl voters can avert their eyes from dreamy Phil Phillips for two seconds, she may make it ... to the top three. B+

Phillip Phillips: Hand it to Philly Phil, he picked a song that allowed him to take a half-step out of his DMB prison, growling through "Fat Bottomed Girls" with, yes, enthusiasm and spirit. He still looks and sounds like the leader of fairly decent bar band, but his charisma finally translated for me. After months of paying homage, Phil answered his phanatics' prayers and played an actual Dave Matthews cover. And, Phil being Phil, he grunted to the converted by picking a deep, deep track. "The Stone" was subtle, bubbling and kind of boring. His good looks might get him close to the finish line, but at some point if you don't listen to anyone, nobody's going to listen to you, either. B+

Skylar Laine: Laine did about what you'd expect, putting some fiddle on the widescreen ballad "The Show Must Go On." She kind of made it her own, but looked and sounded uncharacteristically out-of-place at the beginning, like she was singing carols at an old-age home and never really connected with the lyrics. Randy thought it was one of her best performances, but then again, Randy was wearing a pin that said, "Yo," so... Her take on Jason Aldean's "Tattoos on This Town" was good, I guess. It sounded like a solid mid-tempo country ditty, but didn't show us any new facets of her musical personality. She's either saving some gas for the final stretch or starting to run on fumes. B

Hollie Cavanagh: Of all the Queen tracks, half-Brit Hollie chose "Save Me"? The generic ballad was actually perfect for the generic singer, who once again brought a Dusty Springfield-style white girl soul to a song that didn't quite have enough lift to make her stand out. Lopez felt the emotion, but she was right, Hollie just doesn't seem like she's having fun, and neither were we. Since she's one step from the ledge every week, Cavanagh dipped back into her bag of tricks and covered Miley Cyrus' "The Climb" again. Eh, it was perfectly acceptable, but I'll probably forget about it by the time I finish this sentence. Pack up those piles of doll clothes kid, if it's not this week, it's next. C+

Elise Testone: With her tambourine, Elise looked more like a back-up singer on "I Want It All" than a potential "Idol." Her vocals were solid and the crowd was way into it, but all those weeks in the bottom three appear to have drained some of the confidence and fire in her eyes. It might have been too little, too late. Of all the songs in the universe, Elise picks a Jimi Hendrix tune. Fine, but "Bold as Love"? What young America wants to hear is songs about "shiny metallic purple armor" and "happy turquoise armies." It was gutsy, but weird, and not in the way she probably intended. Might as well start walking to those stools now, honey. C-

Apple ? Sony: Why Apple Can Succeed Post-Jobs

steve-jobs-steve-wozniakWhile I often prefer to watch analysts hoist themselves with their own petard, it's not often that one dumps out a bit of drivel so short-sighted as George Colony at Forrester. In short, Colony believes that Apple is the next Sony - a desiccated organization that has nothing new to offer the world. While he's right about Sony, he's wrong about Apple. Analysts, to be fair, do know a thing or two about a thing or two. I'm sure he's great at plumbing financial data and picking expensive steaks. But in this Forbes piece he cites Max Weber's Theory of Social And Economic Organization, a book that I read in college but haven't had the time to peruse of late. Weber, writing in 1947, breaks organizations down into legal/bureaucratic, traditional, and charismatic. Weber probably knew from charismatic, considering his demi monde, but I doubt his version of a charismatic leader - ?he is set apart from ordinary men and treated as endowed with supernatural, superhuman, or at least specifically exceptional powers or qualities" - is applicable in any case in our modern business climate.

Shure SRH1440

In the iPhone era, headphones have taken a backseat to in-canal earphones for portability reasons. For the professional musician, mastering engineer, or serious audiophile, however, headphones are often still preferred for reference listening. Shure's SRH1440, at $399.99 (list), is actually a bargain for such discerning listeners. Compared to most headphones in this price range, the SRH1440 ?is feature-barren, and home recording studio enthusiasts should look elsewhere, as these open back headphones are designed to leak audio. However, if you're looking for a pair of powerful, professional headphones with excellent audio performance, the SRH1440 deserves your attention.

Design
The SRH1440's headband and circumaural (ear-enclosing) ear cups are black matte plastic, with the white Shure logo above both ears, and a black glossy logo embossed on the top of the band. The inside of the headband is lined with plush foam. At the bottom of each ear cup, there is a jack for the included audio cables?both of which terminate in a gold-plated 3.5mm connector. (A ?-inch gold-plated adapter is included for stereo system and pro gear.)Shure_SRH1440_inline image

The inclusion of an extra detachable audio cable and replacement earpads help extend the life, and thus overall value, of the package. The SRH1440, cables, and the replacement velour earpads and come nuzzled inside a massive black zip-up protective case. The headphones are big on their own, but the case makes it impractical to stuff them in a bag.? Add in the fact that the open back design of the earcups means sound is also projected outward, and we're looking at a pair that's more suitable for home use than portable use.

The most important design element to take into account for a large pair of professional headphones is comfort. Shure did well in this regard. The black velour ear pads are ideal not just because they don't get uncomfortable over long listening periods, but because they also don't get very hot. The headband presses down on the scalp a bit after a long listening session, but the discomfort is only minor?you can easily wear this pair for hours at a time.

Performance
The first thing you notice about the SRH1440's excellent audio performance is the crispness of the mids and highs, which take center stage over bass response. The low frequencies are perfectly represented?they just aren't exaggerated like they are in so many modern headphones, such as the Beats by Dr. Dre from Monster ($349.95, 4 stars). Orchestral music, like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances," sounds amazing, with a sense of space that you don't often get from in-canal earphones or even some headphones. The lower register instruments possess an ideal resonance, but the brass and wooden percussion sit front and center.

On deep bass tracks, like The Knife's "Silent Shout", there is no distortion, though you get the sense that, at maximum volume, it is just about to come creeping in to the equation. Well, no one should be monitoring at top volume, anyway, and at moderate-to-very high volumes the SRH1440 sounds clean as a whistle, reproducing super-deep bass parts clearly, without any crackling or muddiness. For all genres, the SRH1440 provides a flat response approach that lets music be reproduced with little embellishment.

If the $400 price is a bit too high, consider Shure's SRH550DJ ($125, 3.5 stars)?at less than half the price, it's a solid pair of circumaural headphones with far less leakage, which is ideal for DJs and home studios. The KRK Systems KNS-8400 ($149, 4 stars) are slightly pricier than the SRH550DJ , but offer more power and are definitely suited for recording studio applications. And if mobility is more of a priority, check out our Editors' Choice Bowers & Wilkins P5 Mobile Hi-Fi Headphones ($299.95, 4.5 stars)?they're lightweight, on-ear, and sound excellent, though with a bit more embellishment of the lower frequencies. For $400, however, the SRH1440 nails exactly what it's designed for: A precise, dynamic, comfortable pair of headphones suitable for pro applications or casual home listening.

Google+ Share button gives you another option aside from plain 'ol +1s

Image

Although Google's had its +1 button all over the web for some time now, helping folks show their allegiance to things they like, it's previously lacked a dedicated button just for sharing content. That's now changed, as the Google+ development team recently let loose the Share button. The button is similar in appearance to its +1 sibling, but rather than just being a shortcut for quickly slapping content with a virtual high-five, it gives you a way to easily share pages on your Google+ profile. (Yes, you could share through the +1 button, too, but consider this one a bit more focused). Best of all, the Google+ Share button is ready to roll, so move your cursor to the source link below if you'd like to put it on your site or find out more. Happy Liking sharing!

Onavo Extend stretches your data plan, now with CDMA/LTE support

What's Onavo Extend you ask? It's a free app that lets you save money on your data plan by compressing unencrypted data between your device and the web. The result is that you consume up to five times less data -- convenient when you're on a tiered / capped data plan, when you're roaming abroad or when you're on a slower 2G network. In addition, the app keeps track of how much data (and money) you save and which apps use that data. This works by setting up a local proxy server (and changing your APN), then connecting to the company's back end which accesses the internet on your behalf.

Onavo Extend -- which was released for iOS last year and was launched on Android (Ice Cream Sandwich) at Mobile World Congress -- is gaining CDMA/LTE support today for the new iPad and the iPhone 4S on Verizon and Sprint. We first experienced the app at the Google booth in Barcelona and we've been using it on and off since. We've tested it on several devices, including a Galaxy Nexus HSPA+ and an unlocked iPhone 4S on T-Mobile's network (EDGE only) and it works pretty much as advertised. Want to find out more? Hit the break for a demo video along with the obligatory PR.
