Obama's latest economic push has familiar feel

WASHINGTON (AP) ? If President Barack Obama's new focus on the economy sounds familiar, that's because he's done it before.

Since the first year of his presidency, Obama has been launching ? and re-launching ? initiatives on the economy. Some came with new policy proposals, others with catchy slogans.

Remember 2011's "Winning the Future" campaign? Or the "We Can't Wait" initiatives that followed later that year? Just a few months ago, Obama was headlining the "Middle Class Jobs and Opportunity Tour."

So far there's no slogan attached to the White House's latest initiative, which kicks off Wednesday in Galesburg, Ill. The president's advisers are billing his remarks as a major address on the economy, though no new initiatives are expected to be announced.

"I'm going to talk about where we need to go from here, how we need to put behind us the distractions and the phony debates and nonsense that somehow passes for politics these days, and get back to basics," Obama said Monday as he addressed Organizing for Action, the non-profit group backing his agenda.

Obama said Wednesday's speech would kick off a months-long effort to refocus on the economy and start exploring "some big and bold ideas" ? some he's offered previously, and some new ones, too. Aides said those fresh policy proposals would come in a series of follow-up speeches planned through September, most of which will be narrowly targeted on issues like housing, retirement security and expanding access to education.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said Obama's repeated attempts to orient his public agenda on the economy should serve as a reminder that "the president has always been focused on these issues."

"That doesn't mean we don't need to continue to remind people that improving the economic situation in America is the principle reason why our fellow citizens elect and send people to Washington," Carney said.

But congressional Republicans, who continue to be a roadblock for many of the president's economic proposals, dismissed the White House's new public relations push as a retread of old ideas.

"We've seen this song and dance before," said Brendan Buck, a spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio. "Whether it's his health care law, his job-destroying energy policies, or the mountain of regulations piling up, it's the president's own policies that are responsible for this new normal of weak economic growth and high unemployment."

Still, the timing of Obama's latest economic initiative underscores the degree to which jobs and growth have been overshadowed in Washington since the president began his second term. That's been driven in part by the White House, which has invested significant time on other areas of the president's agenda, including the failed effort to enact stricter gun laws and the push for immigration reform, which succeeded in the Senate but faces an uncertain future in the House.

"Here's the thing: It will be a pretty good speech," Obama said. "But I've given some pretty good speeches before. And things still get stuck here in Washington, which is why I'm going to need your help."

A series of foreign policy crises, like the Syrian civil war and Egyptian coup, have also competed for the White House's attention. So have a flurry of recent controversies, including the Internal Revenue Service's targeting of political groups, the Justice Department's seizure of journalists' phone records, and renewed attention on the investigation into the deadly attack on Americans in Benghazi, Libya.

All the while, the economy has slowly but steadily improved. The housing market is coming back, the stock market is on the rise and consumer confidence is near its highest levels of Obama's presidency. Nationwide unemployment is also falling, though at 7.6 percent, it still remains high.

But a new round of fiscal deadlines threaten to upend that progress, adding urgency to the White House's desire to get the economy back on Washington's radar ? while at the same time trying to get the public to side with the president's economic vision.

The potential fiscal showdown in September will focus on the debt ceiling and the automatic federal budget cuts that kicked in earlier this year. Obama wants to end the cuts before they extend into the next fiscal year. And some Republicans want more deficit reduction in exchange for raising the nation's borrowing limit, a bargain Obama says he would not back.

Obama's aides say that while Wednesday's address and subsequent events will touch on the looming fiscal fights, they say they do not see the speech as a legislative negotiating tactic. Nor will the president lay out an economic "to-do" list for Congress, reflecting the White House's recognition that many of the president's proposals would almost certainly face opposition on Capitol Hill, particularly in the Republican-led House.

And that dynamic, just like Obama's repeated economic PR campaigns, may again leave the public with a feeling that they've been here before.

Texas Tales: {Weekend Recap} New House Progress & Family Fun!

This weekend was a really good one?and I'm glad for that, because things are about to get a whole lot of crazy up in here. Moving day is just three more days away!!! We'll be transporting the babies to our new "forever home" on Thursday, July 4, as well as most or all of our apartment belongings. Movers will bring the rest of our stuff from our two giant storage units the following week. It's everything I can do not to throw all the stuff in the pantry into a box, grab the babies and their mountain of supplies and haul it on over to our new place. Course, that's all easier said then done and since I need a small army to make it happen, I'm back to watching the clock run down the hours. Tick, tock...

Saturday morning, I spent a few hours out by myself getting a pedicure and running errands and I loved every minute. I actually really enjoy going to the grocery store and I really, really enjoy going to the grocery store by myself when I don't have strict time restraints that only allow 10 minutes to find and purchase a week's worth of food!

I finally had time to do a little meal planning and so when I got back home, I grilled a steak (on my stove-top grill pan on an electric stove...be impressed!) and made some mac & cheese and green beans for our lunch. The babies munched on the exact same thing, plus a few extra snacks, and really dug into the mac & cheese. The husband and I sat at the table and ate our lunch with them, something we've been doing more and more of lately. Family meal time will definitely be a big staple in our house?our new house!

I also whipped up five freezer meals that will make dinners a cinch after we get moved. The last thing I'll have the energy for is to think about and assemble dinner. I chose meals that I felt the babies would be able to eat as well, and that I could make easy side dishes to go with them like rice, steamed broccoli, salad and so on. I find a lot of my crock pot recipes and freezer meal ideas from the Six Sisters website.?

Sunday we lounged around all morning and implemented our new napping schedule. Instead of two naps at 10am and 2pm, the crew is only going down for one nap right after lunch (around noon). They've been fighting naps pretty hard and don't sleep very long, so I figured this may be the answer to our problems. We're still in the "test phase" so we'll see how it goes over the next few days!

After nap time and dosing everyone with Advil?two of the kiddos have had high fevers and two low-grade fevers as a result of their 12 month vaccines last week?we headed to Home Depot with the quads for the first time. They loved looking around at everything and I think they enjoyed sitting in their quad stroller versus their car seats that attach to the two twin stroller frames. We didn't attract a ridiculous amount of attention, a couple people tried to stop and talk but we just kept moving.

We loaded the babies through the back of the suburban since their car seats were still in place inside. Which meant, ladies and gents, that yours truly had to climb into the back seat like a spider monkey then turn and wrangle the babies over the seat as well and into their car seats. My level of flexibility is mildly impressive sometimes, even to me!!

While we'd been shopping inside, I'd fed the babies animal crackers and graham cookies, then did squeeze pouches of applesauce and a Plum Organics meal for their snack once we got back in the car. Worked out perfectly! They lulled off to sleep on our drive over to the new house so we could check on the progress and drop off a couple things. I was so happy to see the babies bedrooms painted and dry wall going up in the all the holes!

After we got back to the apartment, I made chicken fajitas for dinner, along with refried beans, Spanish rice and guacamole. The babies got their own dinner tray and the rice was a big hit! It also made a biiiiig mess. ;) Again, we sat at the table and ate our dinner as we fed the babies. Thankfully, they're getting better about eating fruits and have been wolfing down strawberries and blueberries.

To our complete happiness, once we put the kiddos down for bed not a single one made a peep and they all slept soundly through the night! The husband and I got to leisurely get ready for bed, watch a couple shows and still fell asleep by 10pm. A perfect weekend in my book, made only better by moving into our awesome new digs in just a few days time. Can't wait to share about our first weekend at the house!

Mark Munoz shows off slimmed down physique for UFC 162 after ?turning to food for comfort?

Last summer, Mark Munoz was knocked out by Chris Weidman. Then he had to recover from a foot injury sustained while training for the Weidman bout. It was a rough turn of events for a fighter who had title shot hopes and who had been on a four-bout winning streak.

He turned to what so many turn to for comfort in tough times -- food. Munoz talked about his struggles on his website.

Battled through injury, self-doubt, and depression. I turned to food for comfort and what I found was more heartache. A never ending cycle of ?eating because I was sad and sad because I was eating.? I had to find peace and comfort in my faith in God, He shaped my life.

In the above picture, Munoz showed off how far he has come since January of this year. He went from 261 lbs. to 199 on June 27, which is not far from his fighting weight of 185 lbs. It's an impressive turnaround for a 35-year-old fighter.

This Saturday, he'll fight Tim Boetsch at UFC 162 with a whole new physique. It's his first chance to get back on the winning track after the loss to Weidman, who will fight for the middleweight belt on the same card. Will his newly healthy body make a difference? Make your pick here.
